Abstract:

Measurements were made of the CW Cerenkov radiation generated by the interaction of a modulated ribbon electron beam with a dielectric reflection coupler. The coupler consists of two identical 1.27-cm wide slab sectors having an interaction length of 10cm. The dielectric coefficient of the coupler material is 15 at the beam modulation frequency of 6.33 Gc. Typical experimental parameters are dc beam current, 0.30 ma gun voltage plus potential well voltage, 70 kv bunch rf power, 1.0 watt and beam-to-dielectric separation, 0.16 cm. Separating the contribution of leakage radiation and resonance radiation from the detected power level gives 4.6 microwatts as the detected Cerenkov power for a typical experimental determination. The generatedto-detected power ratio is determined to be between 165 to 75. Using the calculated value of the beam current amplitude at 6.33 Gc yields 1,250 to 560 ohmscm for the interaction resistance per unit length. The value of 1,250 ohmscm is in good agreement with the interaction resistance predicted by the theory developed in previous work. Author
