Abstract:

The buckling stress of axially compressed thin-walled circular cylindrical shells of finite length is derived from the classical small-deflection equations for nine possible combinations of edge support conditions. It turns out that the effect upon the critical stress of the length-todiameter ratio of the shell is small except in some cases when the shell is very short. On the other hand, changes in the details of the edge support can lead to reduction factors of 12 or less to be applied to the classical value of the critical stress.
