Abstract:

An analysis was made of adiabatic, steady-state gas flow with combined area change and mass addition. A pseudo-one-dimensional model was assumed. A more detailed flow analysis was made for the class of single port rocket grains in which the differential rate of change of channel port area with respect to burning surface area is constant throughout the length of the grain. The resulting system of equations was coded for IBM 7090 computer. The change of channel geometry with time was not considered in the analysis. The relationships between various dimensionless groups involving flow variables, channel geometry and propellant properties are presented in the form of equations and graphs. The relationships reduce to those for constant area flow when a parameter lambda is equal to zero. This parameter is positive when the channel area increases with length and is negative when the channel area decreases. The limiting flow for converging channels lambda equals minus infinity represents isentropic flow. Numerical examples which illustrate the effect of channel taper on rocket grain design are appended.
