Abstract:

An evaluation of Time-of-Day Magnetic Tape Storage and Retrieval equipment was performed to determine the capability of the equipment to provide a Binary Coded Decimal BCD time-of-day reference that could be used for time-correlation of voice recordings on magnetic tape equipment within an Air Traffic Control Facility of the Federal Aviation Agency. Accuracy of the BCD time-ofday reference was determined using photographic techniques in conjuction with time references obtained from the NAFEC Range Control Central Facility and radio station WWV. Time-of-day continuity data were obtained by controlled data recording and systematic observations during reproduction of the BCD time-of-day reference. It was concluded that the equipment was capable of generating precise BCD time-of-day indices for the purpose of time-correlation of magnetic tape voice recordings. It was recommended that following the correction of the deficiencies noted in this report, the equipment be adopted for use within air traffic control facilities and prior to Agency-wide implementation, the first article be installed at an operational location to further determine reliability, maintainability and operational effectiveness.
