Abstract:

An electron bombardment system was constructed using the technique of differentially pumped chambers. A monoenergetic beam of electrons with energy up to 60 kev and current up to 5 ma can be obtained operating into a target chamber at 1 atmosphere of air or nitrogen. The rela tive integrated intensities of the various spectral components observed from air and nitrogen at pressures of 5, 200, and 600 Torr when bombarded by 50 kev electrons are reported. The spectral region 3200A to 10 800A was analyzed. The observation of several previously unobserved bands and lines of nitrogen is reported. Author
