Abstract:

The work being performed in the program is intended to provide experimental data to assist in establishing criteria for material selection, design, and fabrication of highly efficient pressure vessels. Tests of AISI 4340 steel were conducted in various biaxial stress fields at seven strength levels, along with wide-bend and uniaxial tensile tests. Ultimate biaxial stresses in high-strength steels exceed the ultimate uniaxial tensile strength by significant amounts depending on the biaxial stress ratio, the pressure vessel shape, and the character of the uniaxial stress-strain diagram.
