Abstract:
The molecular band systems and continua which contribute to the absoprtion coefficient of air between 2000 and 8000K are discussed. In the vacuum ultraviolet the major contributors are the oxygen Schumann-Runge continuum, several band systems of nitrogen and nitric oxide, and the photoionization continua of all three molecules. In the near ultraviolet and visible region, in addition to the band systems of N2, N2, NO and O2 generally considered, the systems of NO2 and CN are shown to be important. In the infrared there are many band systems which may contribute, and further work is needed to determine their relative importance. Author
