Abstract:

This report describes measurements of the effect of hydrostatic pressure on optical properties of group 4 and group 3-5 semiconductors in the infrared, visible, and near-ultraviolet regions of the spectrum. The results of these experiments provide evidence in support of the following empirical rule inferred previously from earlier work on pressure effects Energy separations of corresponding electronic states in related materials change with pressure at nearly the same rate. The correlation between pressure coefficient and transition type permits investigation of electronic energy-band structure by means of optical-pressure experiments. This approach was taken to study the band structure of GaP. Author
