The design of a general-purpose digital computer that performs arithmetic operations in the residue number sys tem is described. The residue number system provides a solution to a prime problem in the design of an arithmetic unit, obtaining a fast multiply operation at a reasonable cost. In the implemented design, the execution times of addition, subtraction and multiplication are the same. The arithmetic unit is implemented with transistor logic circuits based on the use of directly coupled complementary transistors and contains about 1500 transistors for three registers, the decoders, matrices, encoders and special control circuits. The equivalent word length of the arithmetic unit is slightly in excess of fifteen binary digits. Author
