Comparison tests of the direct optical heterodyne system and subcarrier modulated optical doppler system were conducted. From the test results with diffuse targets, it was concluded that the subcarrier approach is more practical for space applications. The optical heterodyne system is advantageous in resolution and accuracy for measuring very low velocities less than 1 footsec. A combined optical radar system was developed whereby each approach could be conveniently tested. The experimental equipment is described, including the criteria for aperture diameter and spot size. Comparative test results are presented in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, sensitivity, minimum detectable power, and resolution. Author
