Abstract:

The functional equation technique of dynamic programming is applied to the study of quadratic functionals whose Euler variational equations are linear self-adjoint partial differential equations of the second order. A first consequence is the classical Hadamard variational formula for the Greens function of a region. Some extensions are indicated.
