INTERACTIONS BETWEEN A PARTLY-IONIZED LAMINAR SUBSONIC JET AND A COOL STAGNANT GAS.

The laminar mixing of a high temperature partly ionized subsonic argon plasma jet with a surrounding helium atmosphere was studied both experimentally and theoretically. Experimental measurements of the enthalpy, helium mole fraction, and stagnation pressure were performed with a small calorimetric probe. Assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium, which is shown to be reasonable, these measurements give the thermodynamic state of the gas and its velocity. The problem was considered theoretically using the boundary layer approximation. Results indicate the rapid diffusion of the helium into the jet, and the experiment shows helium diffuses up into the nozzle. The axial temperature gradient is less steep, and that of the velocity still shallower. Author
