Abstract:

In order to understand the effects of certain properties of protective coating materials on corrosion protection, a study was made of these properties without the effects of corrosion present. The moisture absorption properties of various hot-melt coatings have been so investigated for periods up to 14-23 years. It was found that low penetration coal-tar enamel established the lowest absorption rate of the 11 materials tested. It was also found that after 5 years each material reached a stabilized moisture absorption rate. This report covers the performance of four materials remaining in test after 8 years of exposure.
