An experimental study of two-dimensional elasticity problems, making use of the birefringence of glass subjected to stresses was conducted. A suitably cut glass sheet -- a reduced model of the body to be studied -- was subjected to forces proportional to those which act on this body in reality it became birefringent and, at each of its points, behaved as a crystalline sheet the axes of this sheet coincided with the directions of the principal stresses and the measurement of its birefringence furnished the difference of these two stresses.
