A unique seven-day series of hourly rawinsonde observations completed in April 1960 makes possible a detailed study of the tropopause and its hourly fluctuations. Tropopauses are grouped serially, according to synoptic events and tropopause pressures, as moving or stationary. Hourly tropopause pressures are estimated and standard errors of estimate are computed for each tropopause set by least squares regression. Pressures are determined using the latest WMO objective criteria. When the lowest tropopause appears at a pressure over 500 mb, a change in criteria is proposed to preclude errors such as mistaking frontal surfaces for tropopauses, but to retain multiple, folded or reforming tropopauses consistently. Simultaneous rather than alternating transmission and transcription of temperature, moisture, and pressure data is suggested as an improvement. Author
