Given the known gauge-independent value of F sub ab x, F sub cd y, we derive the most general expression for the commutator A sub a X, A sub b y. The latter contains four arbitrary functions N sub a x, y, which, if suitably chosen, may yield the Coulomb gauge, the Feynman gauge, the Landau gauge, etc. It is however impossible to go over from one value of N sub a x, y to another by means of an operator gauge transformation, unless the difference between both values of N sub a satisfies some differential relations.
