The program has been divided into two tasks. Task I covers the design and fabrication of Optoelectronic Functional Electronic Blocks. The first Optoelectronic Pulse Amplifiers OPA were fabricated during this report period. A high percentage of the amplifier bars were operable, with component values well within the required tolerances. With the exception of low-temperature cracking of the optical coupling glass the design goals of the OPA have been met. Task II is concerned with the development of semiconductor and measurement technology necessary to adequately implement the Optoelectronic Functional Electronic Blocks selected for study. The technology and measurement investigations reported under Task II include A The evaluation of several high-index glasses for use as optical coupling media B the measurement of transient rise time of light output from GaAs IR sources C the characteristics of GaAsP light emitters D the description and characterization of an improved IR spectrometer detection system E the description of a new planar etching technique for the A face of 111 oriented GaAs and F the characteristics of GaAs guard-ring diodes.
