Abstract:

The article considers briefly the use of radioactive substances in such diversified problems as the following the radioscopic examination of metallic articles of defects by means of the gamma-radiation from cobalt-60 the preparation of autoluminescent compounds the automatic control of industrial processes such as regulating the flow of liquids and the thickness of metal sheets and foils the preservation of foodstuffs by sterilization through irradiation the manufacture of supersensitive measuring devices the reduction in ignition delay time in radar gas-discharge tubes and the manufacture of high-value resistors the use of the method of tagged atoms for determining wear in moving parts of mechanical devices such as piston rings in internal combustion engines and for studying the diffusion of various metallic components in alloys.
