The investigation was concerned with the effects of some perturbations on the sharp optical lines emitted by chromium and vanadium ions in MgO. Because the atomic states of the impurity ion are dependent on the lattice environment, it is possible to modify the radiation from such impurity ions by perturbing the host crystal. The following effects were investigated i the effect of the perturbations caused by lattice vibrations phonons on the radiation, and ii, the effects of static perturbations pressure, magnetic fields and electric fields on the optical transitions.
