Abstract:

The present status of creep-buckling theory is reviewed in the light of the development of column theory, including the elastic theory for straight columns Euler, inelastic column theory Engesser-Karman-Shanley, and eccentric columns Karman, etc.. It is shown that the existence of a critical time requires a nonlinear increasing relationship between the creep strain rate and the stress. The isotangent-modulus method is described and applied to various types of buckling and design problems. Mathematical theories of creep-buckling are discussed in a general way. Suggestions for future analytical and experimental work on this phenomenon are included. Author
