Abstract:

High-frequency geometric ray theory is used to study the refracted arrival from a layer embedded in an infinite medium. At large ranges, the amplitude decays less rapidly than for an infinitely thick layer. When the ratio of layer thickness to dominant wavelength is large, the refracted arrival may consist of more than one event and each event exhibits distance-limited shingling.
