A performance study has been made of two types of laser material, matched quite closely in all characteristics except their fluorescence lifetime. Data has been recorded to indicate conversion efficiency as a function of input power and the reflectivity of the output mirror. In addition, an estimate of beam divergence has been made by comparing images recorded on carbon paper or developed, unexposed, Polaroid print paper. Conclusions have been drawn from these data as to the role of fluorescence lifetime and its related quantum efficiency to the practical performance of a laser material. Author
