Abstract:

A discussion is presented concerning developments in Russia following the death of Stalin. Official Soviet propaganda made an initial attempt to restore Stalins memory to favor, depicting him as a devoted follower of Lenin, a lifelong exponent of collective leadership, and a humble servant of the will of the Party. The disproportionately heavy stress upon Stalin as a war leader, however, probably reflected the desire of the Kremlin leadership to reassert the principle of Party-political supremacy over the armed forces in the face of claims apparently emanating from professional military circles for an autonomous status within the Soviet system.
