The current investigations indicate that the short, discontinuous aligned fibers in a composite only a fraction of the fiber strength is realized. The concentration of fibers at which point the strength of the composite levels off depends upon the fiber diameter. The ductile-brittle transition found in silver-steel composites were also found in tungsten-silver composites. The fracture mode--whether matrix failure or fiber failure--appears to be related to the degree of strengthening attainable. Author
