A search was made for a material approximating the following combination of qualities A strongly colored reflectivity, specular or diffuse, in the near IR conforming closely to the schedule 5 micron 1.0 reflec tivity 4 micron, 0.9 3 micron, 0.8 2.5 micron, 0.7 2 micron, 0.45 1.5 micron, 0.3 1 micron, 0.2 0.8 micron, 0.1. Minimum absorption at all wavelengths. Minimum weight per unit area of reflecting surface, in the order of l gmsq meter 5000 sq. ft. lb this is the weight of a plastic foil about 1 micron thick. Easy dispersal, from storage in a compact form, into separated airborne flakes or bubbles, large enough 30 micron diameter that diffraction effects will not distort the color, yet small enough to resist deformation by ordinary air turbulence. Cost, in the storage form, not exceeding . 02sq ft.
