Abstract:

Substrate work has been completed by the successful development of refractory Pt-alumina substrates that meet all substrate requirements. Work on SiO barriers has been completed, wth the conclusion that such barriers are unsuitable for long-life cathodes. Unexpected problems have been encountered in realizing compound oxide barriers, but a new process has been briefly investigated that promises to solve most of the problems. The problem of high lateral resistance on evaporated Pt films has been solved. Special phototubes are under construction that will permit the work function of evaporated rareearth boride films to be measured. The life of Zn-MgO barriers is at least on the order of 1000 hours. Construction of equipment is under way to permit more extensive life testing to be done. Further image tests using a phosphor screen have been made that further confirm the uniform emission current being obtained from cathodes. Author
