Abstract:

The simple viscoelastic models associated with the names Maxwell, Kelvin and standard linear solid, and generalizations limited to model representation with a few elements, or equivalently low order differential operator representations, commonly do not express real material behavior satisfactorily. Recent work in the United States in linear viscoelastic stress analysis has emphasized formulation of the theory and methods of solution for general linear material behavior. The structure of the theory is considered, and also approaches to various types of boundary value problems, including, for example, moving boundaries and mixed type boundary conditions, which prevent the direct use of transform methods. Discussion is also included of the influence of temperature variation on the basis of thermo-rheologically simple material response. Author
