Abstract:

The stress-strain behavior, Shore-D hardness, and oxygen sorption of polyN-vinyl carbazole were studied as a function of dose absorbed in the mixed radiation field of a nuclear reactor. The samples were irradiated in air at room temperature to three different doses 5.9 x 10 to the 9th power, 1.1 x 10 to the 10th power, and 6.4 x 10 to the 10th power ergsgmC. The elastic modulus increased slightly with dose but the general shape of the stress-strain curve was not changed by radiation. At a significance level of 0.01 the tensile strength appeared unaffected, while at a significance level of 0.025 the results of the analysis suggested an initial increase at 1.1 x 10 to the 10th power ergsgmC followed by a small decrease at the highest dose. No significant change in Shore-D hardness was observed. The postirradiation sorption of oxygen in irradiated PNVC increased with absorbed dose up to a saturation value.
