Abstract:

The dependence of the rest potentials established on the oxide-free platinum electrodes on pH of the solution was examined at a given partial pressure of oxygen. Also, the change in the nature of the potential with the time of contact of the electrode with the oxygen saturated solution was analyzed. Catalytic activity for the reduction of oxygen on a number of metal electrodes was examined with the aim of determining what factors of properties of the substrate are controlling the rate of the reaction. The results of oxygen reduction Tafel line on some noble metals and alloys in oxygen-saturated perchloric acid solution are given. Finally, the mechanism of oxygen reduction is briefly discussed, in particular with reference to a method of detecting possible intermediates in the reaction. Author
