Abstract:

Glycolysis in cell-free rat brain homogenate was studied by lactate production under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, and at high pressures of oxygen HOP, usually 5 atm. absolute. Glycolysis was markedly and rapidly increased at high oxygen pressure, more so with phosphate buffer alone than with combined phosphate and bicarbonate buffers. The HOP effect mimicked a Pasteur-like effect in this system and also resembled the effects of sodium azide and of potassium cyanide upon the system. This HOP response depended upon the total oxygen pressure, not the total mechanical gas pressure per se. Varying phosphate concentration had no significant effect on the response.
