Abstract:

The permeabilities of the homologous series of straight chain alcohols C1 - C8 through human epidermal membranes were investigated. In this series a smooth decrease in the polar character of the molecules occurs. Since the molecular volume increases only by approximately a factor of four within the series the effect of increasing molecular size on the diffusion rate is negligible i.e. approx. 1.6. Permeability constants were obtained for each alcohol as a function of temperature 0 - 60C and activation energies were computed.
