Abstract:

The electro-chemical interactions between the hypersonic stream of weakly ionized gases and the stagnation region of electrically biased blunt bodies are analyzed. The analysis is based on a continuum description. From the study, typical current-potential relationships for electrostatic stagnation probes are obtained. The effects on the electrical characteristics of the finite rate collisional energy exchange between electrons and neutrals, and the nonequilibrium electron-ion recombination are studied. Particular attention is given to the electron temperature variations in the free stream, shock, and the shock layer.
