Abstract:

A digital computer simulation is evolved for studying the dynamics of a vanishingly thin infinite planar sheet beam injected with symmetry between two parallel semi-infinite plane conductors joined by a third equipotential plane through which the beam is injected. A check on the discrete simulation is effected by allowing the machine to compute the asymptotic behavior in time and displacement of the velocity of a long stable beam operating slightly below critical perveance. Next, the semi-infinite beam is programmed at 110 of critical perveance, and the resultant unstable behavior studied. Finally, super-criticalperveance behavior is simulated for a beam terminated at a length six times the magnitude of the parallel plate separation. It is verified that the mechanism of limiting and of instability generation is governed entirely by behavior within that part of the beam quite close to the injection plane and is thus independent of beam length beyond a magnitude of approximately 3 or 4 times the separation of the parallel conducting planes.
