Abstract:

A Theory is developed for treating propagation of electromagnetic waves in a three dimensional periodic medium with non-orthogonal lattice structure. The generalized transmission line viewpoint is adopted, that is, each plane of obstacles is considered as a single discontinuity loading the free space or the supporting material at periodic intervals. Such a discontinuity can be described by the usual circuit type matrices the properties of these are examined in detail. Another type of medium is also analyzed, in it a plane of obstacles is obtained from an adjacent plane by a translation and rotation. The eigenwaves in this medium are elliptically polarized waves. Some unusual features of the band structure are illustrated for a strip and a disk medium.
