The solid and liquid state steric configurations of several bis-N-alkylsalicylaldimino-nickel II complexes were examined spectrophotometrically and by magnetic and dielectric polarization measurements. It was found that the n-propyl derivatives are planar, the t-butyl derivatives pseudo-tetrahedral, and the secalkyl derivatives either planar or pseudo-tetrahedral. Thermochemical, electronic, and steric implications are discussed. R-N-salicylaldimine-cobaltIII complexes were found to exist in the trans-octahedral configuration only.
