Abstract:

One of the problems in the design of a satellite radio communication system is to design an antenna that can be used satisfactorily to transmit to, and receive from, the satellite over a desired frequency band. This analysis presents a theoretical study of the driving-point impedance of a cylindrical antenna imbedded in the ionosphere. The antenna model is a cylindrical, center-fed, perfectly conducting antenna. The ionosphere model is a homogeneous, anisotropic, neutral cold plasma magneto-ionic medium. The anisotropy is caused by the earths magnetic field which is assumed to be uniform in the vicinity of the antenna. The antenna driving-point impedance is calculated for the antenna oriented both to parallel and perpendicular to the earths magnetic field. The results are valid for all frequencies below HF, with special emphasis on the VLF spectrum. Author
