This paper considers the design of binary signals for transmission over a channel with additive white Gaussian noise and to be received by a memoryless correlation detector. The requirements of partial and total bandwidth limitations are considered. The signal is chosen so as to minimize the probability of error due to the combined effects of the noise and intersymbol interference. The resultant signals for both types of bandwidth limitation are expressed in terms of prolate spheroidal wave functions. The method of signal design presented can be used successfully to improve the performance of feedback communication links. Author
