The measurements of noise levels which were observed with several types of hydrophones and hydrophone array assemblies are compared with the ambient sea noise at the time of measurement. The flow noise for single hydrophones was too high to make comparisons of the different methods of construction. Hydrophone array noise levels were from one-fifth to one-half the ambient level. In the array tests, hydrophones that were acceleration balanced and compliantly mounted within a cylinder had noise levels about one-fourth of the noise levels observed with other types of construction in the 100 to 400 cycle range.
