Abstract:

The electrical volume resistivity of naphthalene, phenanthrene and glucose was determined in the region of the melting point and, in the case of glucose, in the glass transition region. Both naphthalene and phenanthrene exhibit abrupt increases in the magnitude of the resistivity upon solidification and crystallization from the melt. This change in magnitude and the subsequent increase in the temperature dependence of the resistivity is attributed to the sudden formation of a polycrys talline solid. Glucose, on the other hand, which is an amorphous solid, exhibits no such abrupt increases. However, differences in the temperature dependence of the resistivity of glucose are found in the glass transition region. These differences are discussed. The results of the investigation show that electrical volume resistivity techniques are suitable for investigating the kinetics of crystallization of semicondutors. Author
