Using tyrosine as a substrate, the triplet state of fluorescein and eosin dyes are quenched at about the same rate. It was found that more than 30 of the triplets were quenched in electron transfer reaction with the substrate. Also the ratio of the rate of electron transfer to the rate of energy transfer could be measured and found to be lower for eosin than for fluorescein. From this it can be inferred that the dianionic eosin triplet is a weaker reducing agent than the dianionic fluorescein triplet. No indications of tripletoxygen complexes were found. Author
