Abstract:

The effect of wire length on the initiation of PETN by exploding platinum wires was investigated using a one microfarad capacitor charged to 2000 volts as the energy source. The energy density deposited in the wire was found to increase with decreasing wire length but there is an optimum length for effecting detonation. This is apparently governed by the energy density deposited in the wire and a minimum critical volume of explosive which must be initiated.
