Abstract:

The feasibility of the generation of short pulsed D. C. power by means of electromechanical energy conversion was investigated. A two-coil primitive system is analyzed and the effect, on the output of a third short circuited coil closely coupled to the excitation winding, was studied both with respect to the pulse magnitude as well as the pulse shape. From the results obtained, a shielding scheme was developed and the basic electromechanical pulser evolved the main feature of the developed pulser being a conducting cylinder surrounding the armature. The conducting cylinder accomplished the dual purpose of shielding the armature from the main pole iron, resulting in a drastically reduced armature selfinductance as well as shielding the excitation circuit from the effects of the armature reaction, thus making the excitation circuit, in effect, current source driven.
