Abstract:
The report contains a survey of the literature pertaining to ecological and physiological adaptation in native South Americans. In addition, previously unpublished data obtained on the cold and heat adaptation of indigenous Peruvians is presented. The survey is focalized on adaptation to climate and altitude, but a brief section also considers the problems of adaptation to diet, disease and subsistence activity. The relatively short time span available for indigenous groups to adapt is discussed, and the scientific utility of comparing findings in South Americans with Eastern Hemisphere groups is examined.
