Meteorological rocket data were used to develop a model of the seasonal changes of wind and temperature in the stratosphere between the altitudes of 30 and 50 km. The model describes the spring and fall reversals of the zonal winds and meridional temperature gradients. In spring, the reversal of the temperature gradient and zonal wind begins at high altitudes in the polar and tropical latitudes and is complete by late May. The fall reversal of the temperature gradients is complete by the autumnal equinox. The reversal from summer easterlies to winter westerlies proceeding downward and equatorward from high polar altitudes is complete by late September of early October. Author
