Abstract:
Multilevel quantization of a variable which has a value in a continuous range is investigated for a sequential probability radio test. Emphasized is its application to signal detection, where the decision as to the presence of a signal is based on successive measurements of the receiver output. Each measurement would be quantized into one of a finite set of values by comparison with a set of reference levels. Curves for choosing optimum sets of reference levels are given for underlying Rice, Rayleigh, and Gaussian distributions. Multinomial sequential tests which use optimally quantized data are compared with those which use non-optimally quantized data and with sequential tests which use unquantized data. Author
