Abstract:

This report reviews the progress made in the early phases of the program on the development of a low-noise, backwardwave oscillator. The program objective was to develop an oscillator that would be voltage tunable over the arbitrary range 2000 to 4000 Mc with a signal-to-noise ratio of 120 db, measured 30 Mc from the signal frequency. The design of the slow-wave structure is reviewed and data obtained on the operating tube is presented. Past operation of the tube is dis cussed. Power output versus frequency data indicates that the tube will operate best in the range of 3.5 to 5.5 Gc. A value of 110 db for the signal-to-noise ratio was measured, indicating that the signal-to-noise objectives of the program will be met. Action to be taken in the final phase of this program is outlined. Author
