Abstract:
Theoretical and experimental data is presented that establishes feasibility of designing an eleven bit digital displacement transducer using the optical ruling technique. Experimental data was obtained on an eleven bit displacement transducer with parallel Gray coded output. The full scale travel was 0.1024 inches and the resolution was fifty microinches. Design concepts incorporated in the experimental transducer are feasible for production units although considerable work remains to be performed in miniaturization and optimization of components and design.
