The manufacturing process to produce a titanium aircraft wheel has been successfully accomplished. This was accomplished. This was accomplished by the development of titanium forging techniques. The program consisted of three phases Phase I, Wheel Design and Wheel Forging Design Phase II, Tool Design and Tool Fabrication and Phase III, Tool and Forging Tryouts. This report is concerned primarily with Phase III. Originally, three die sets - pre-blocker, blocker, and finish dies - were developed to produce the optimum forging with the desiredflow and fill. However, late in the program, it became obvious that an additional die operation would be rquired. This was performed by interchanging parts from the pre-blocker and blocker dies, and it became the first operation on the forging. The forging was then processed through the three proposed operations. The finished forging was produced without defect and exhibited properties in excess of the minimum requirements of AMS 4928.
