Abstract:
This report presents a 2 12 year climatology of penetrations of the tropopause at 9 stations in the United States. WSR-57 radar data for 1961-1963 are summarized by geographical area, by months, and on a diurnal basis. The main summary is for penetrations greater than 5,000 and 10,000 feet. Conclusions are that penetrations of the tropopause occur 1 near the time of maximum thunderstorm activity, 2 mostly in the summer, 3 in the areas of greatest severe thunderstorm activity 4 there was no simple relationship found between ttropopause penetrations and the number of thunderstorms and 5 there was no useful relationship found between tropoxceseixigyt5v the extent of the tropopause penetrations.
