Abstract:
Full expressions for membrane and bending energy densities are derived. The principle of minimum potential energy is used to determine the buckling load. It is found that the buckling load has a dependency on the thickness to radius ratio, tR. For tR approaching zero, this buckling load approaches that obtained by neglecting nonlinear meridional and circumferential displacements. For tR equal to 0.03, the former is 4.5 per cent higher than the latter. A curve is furnished showing the variation of the buckling load with tR. An erroneous strain-displacement relationship given in Novozhilovs book, Foundations of the Nonlinear Theory of Elasticity, is pointed out and corrected. Author
